Chapter 1: Powering up spells In the first volume of this series readers were instructed on the correct use of a wand to perform the most basic spells. This second volume demonstrates techniques that will enable the more advanced student to build and sustain magical power at the tip of the wand before it is released. This technique, when mastered, enables the casting of far more powerful spells but the reader is warned that this is not without risk and therefore requires the utmost concentration.
Chapter 2: The Wand Lighting Charm In the first volume of this series, we have learned how to cast the Wand Lighting Spell (Lumos), a Charm that causes the tip of the wand to glow, and its variations: Lumos Solem and Lumos Duo. We will now study hoe to power up this spell, more precisely how to perform Lumos Maxima.
Lumos Maxima
Lumos Maxima is a stronger version of Lumos. It creates a massive ball of light at the end of the wand which is so powerful it can be cast off from the end of the wand and continue on for several minutes afterward, floating in mid-air. The incantantion is Lumos Maxima (pronounced LOO-mohs MAKS-ee-ma), derived from the Latin lumen, meaning "light," and "maxima", which means "very great" or "greatest", and the wand movement required to cast this charm is an elongated S-shaped gesture. However, when the caster wishes the ball of light to separate from his wand and travel through the air, an additional wand movement is needed, more precisely a whip like action.
Lumos Maxima has the same effects as the basic Wand Lighting Spell, including its uses in Defence Against the Dark Arts. Being much more powerful than Lumos, it allows the caster to fight off stronger spectral foes or a larger group of them. Another advatage of Lumos Maxima is that it offers the possibility to cast off the ball of light and to throw it through the air, which can be very useful when trying to light remote places that you can't access easily, or repel spectral foes without getting too close to them. However, this charm being a power up of the basic spell, it is also more difficult to perform, requiring the utmost concentration and attention as the risks of an accident are greater.
